WIC encourages members to utilize farmers market benefits this summer

Springfield-Greene County Health and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) family health and nutrition program is able to provide additional benefits through the Missouri WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (WIC FMNP). WIC members receive $20 in benefits per person, annually, that can be used to purchase eligible foods at participating farmers’ markets and roadside stands.

Eligible foods that members can purchase with their FMNP benefits include fresh cut cooking herbs and fresh fruits and vegetables. WIC FMNP also supports local farmers since food purchased with these benefits must be grown in Missouri. A list of eligible markets, vendors and products can be found at WICworks417.com.

WIC members receive monthly benefits to purchase supplemental foods designed to meet the special nutritional needs of those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as infants and children. The Health Department encourages those who are pregnant, those with newborns, and families with children under 5 years to head to WICworks417.com to see if they qualify for membership.

The WIC family health and nutrition program is more than a food package. WIC members can also receive nutrition education, breastfeeding education and support, and referrals for health care and other services.
