West Central, one of Springfield’s oldest neighborhoods, shines not just for its historic charm but for the warmth and unity of its residents. Known as the most walkable neighborhood in town, West Central is where neighbors come together to make a difference in each other’s lives.
The Birthplace of Route 66 Car Show and Festival, an iconic event that rolls through West Central every year, recently witnessed a remarkable display of neighborly camaraderie. This beloved gathering, started by West Central in 2011, attracted an astonishing 560 car show entries and brought over 60,000 visitors to our neighborhood. But behind the scenes, it was the dedicated volunteers from O’Reilly Auto Parts and our very own neighbors who braved sweltering heat and drenching rain to ensure the car show’s smooth operation.
One visitor from Texas described it as “the best run and managed car show” he had ever attended. The secret to its success? Neighbors helping neighbors. The dedication of these volunteers, fueled by a love for their community, made this event unforgettable.
In West Central, it’s no secret that the neighborhood includes some of the poorest residents of our city, but it also includes some of the most generous. Another example of this community spirit is the addition of a community fridge. Several neighbors have taken it upon themselves to regularly fill it with fresh produce and frozen foods, creating a valuable resource for those in need. Their selflessness exemplifies the true spirit of neighbors helping neighbors.
The community’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty is another testament to West Central’s spirit. Regular stream cleanups of Jordan Creek, which meanders through our neighborhood, demonstrate a shared commitment to environmental stewardship. These gatherings, often accompanied by BBQs and community bonding, highlight the neighborhood’s dedication to preserving its unique natural assets.
Recently, a fierce storm left one neighbor with a tree perilously perched on her home. The Miller family of West Walnut (Jonathan, Melissa and Julius) and another neighbor took matters into their own hands. They worked tirelessly in the early morning hours to remove the bulk of the tree, sparing their neighbor further damage. Their determination and kindness are a shining example of neighbors coming together to lend a hand.
These stories emphasize the importance of nurturing a culture of mutual aid. West Central is a place where checking on your neighbor isn’t just a polite gesture but a meaningful act of community care. They remind us that, in this neighborhood, we’re not just neighbors; we’re lifelines for each other.
If you’d like to be part of this incredible community and join in on the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors, we encourage you to consider becoming a member of the West Central Neighborhood Alliance.
