Grant Avenue Parkway improvements have steadily progressed since construction began in May 2022 with the rapid construction of a new roundabout and parking lot modifications at Parkview High School. Planned transportation and infrastructure elements in sections 1 and 2 of the parkway, between University and Catalpa streets, are now largely complete, including a new 10-foot multi-use path, new sidewalk and pedestrian-friendly intersection and crosswalk upgrades.
A new sidewalk was completed connecting the parkway to the new Jarrett Middle School along Portland Avenue. Updates to gas, water, wastewater and sewer utilities are also complete in these sections, with electrical lines installed underground. Final landscaping and roadway pavement surfacing are anticipated when a greater portion of the parkway route is complete.
Grant Avenue is currently one-way, southbound only in sections 2-5 of the parkway route (between Sunshine and Walnut streets). Northbound traffic is advised to follow the posted detour generally using Campbell Avenue. Section 2 (between Sunshine and University) is expected to reopen to northbound traffic at the end of February, while sections 3-5, (Meadowmere to Walnut streets) are expected to reopen to northbound in summer/fall, depending on weather and contractor schedules.
“We have completed acquisition of necessary right-of-way easements in section 2, the remaining southern segment of the Grant Avenue Parkway route – allowing our contractor crews to quickly construct utility, roadway and pedestrian improvements,” explains Project Manager Leree Reese. “Upon completion of this segment, the final asphalt pavement can then be applied in all of section 2, from Sunshine to Ildereen.”
Final asphalt application is expected to take place in the springtime when temperatures are more suited to asphalt application. Landscaping and tree planting along completed portions of the Grant Avenue Parkway is anticipated in spring or summer.
Northbound traffic between Sunshine and University is advised to follow the posted detour generally using Campbell Avenue.
