SPD adds comfort K9 to support employee wellness, name selected

The Springfield Police Department asked the public for their input to select the name for the department’s new comfort K9, an 8-week-old chocolate lab. With more than 52% of the 4,167 votes cast, the winning name is Lt. Dan.

A portion of the $35,000 grant from the Gary Sinise Foundation was used to purchase a comfort K9 to serve the department and support officer wellness. The remainder of the grant will be used for future officer wellness initiatives.

“Engaging with a dog is proven to reduce stress and increase oxytocin,” Capt. Eric Reece said. “An officer or non-sworn employee who is in a good place both mentally and emotionally, is better able to serve Springfield.” Capt. Reece was responsible for the research and implementation of SPD’s comfort K9 program.

SPD’s comfort K9 is intended to serve department employees, but there is the possibility to expand the program in the future, and further engage the community as Lt. Dan gets settled in his new role.
