The Woodland Heights Neighborhood Association’s Art Committee has partnered with the Commercial Street CID (Community Improvement District) and the Springfield Police Officers Association to bring more art to Historic C-Street’s core.
Strolling along Historic C-Street you may have noticed the blank window space at 233 E. Commercial St., at what was previously Drury on C-Street. The building now sees regular use from the Springfield Police Officers Association, but the public is presented with only a dark curtain to view from the street. For the moment, that has been remedied.
Thanks to the keen eye of CID President Irene Schaefer, who attended a Woodland Heights Creatives – Meet & Greet event, the works of Woodland Heights artist DuWayne Johnson are now bringing a spark of color to negative space on Historic C-Street.
Johnson’s streetscapes celebrate the beauty of Springfield and surrounding areas and feel perfectly at home in the bustling center of C-Street.
“I think his work is vibrant and captivating. It captures the spirit of Springfield,” Schaefer said.
Johnson says he is thrilled that his work is out in the world bringing joy to those who see it.
Do yourself a favor and take a stroll along Historic C-Street to see these wonderful paintings. The collection is rotated every two weeks to avoid sun damage.
Keep watching the windows at 233 E. Commercial St. for more upcoming collaborative efforts. In Woodland Heights, we’re convinced that artistic energy can be harnessed to transform a community. And we’re also pretty sure that community is the magic of C-Street.
The meet and greets will continue every second Friday at 7 p.m. at the Charlie Norr Community Center. 316 W. Atlantic St. The committee’s mission is to find more talent to nurture for the greater good of the north side of Springfield.
Stay tuned to Woodland Heights’ social media and website calendar for more upcoming arts events. “Porch Pickin’ in Woodland Heights,” returns every third Sunday until Oct. 20 to various porches throughout Woodland Heights. Silent Nights in Woodland Heights, an outdoor bi-weekly silent film series, returned in June. Watch social media and the calendar for the schedule.
