October is national Pedestrian Safety Month. In 2021, Springfield started holding annual Lantern Walks to draw attention to our most vulnerable road users in a fun and educational way. This year’s Lantern Walks will take place in the Rountree, Delaware, West Central and Galloway Village neighborhoods, and along Commercial Street (hosted by the Woodland Heights and Robberson neighborhoods).
Organized through the pedestrian safety program SGF Yields, the City of Springfield partners with neighborhoods to organize the Lantern Walks. Neighbors, schools and families are encouraged to build and decorate luminaries ahead of the event. On the first Saturday in October, starting at sunset, residents stroll with their illuminated lanterns along a designated route. Starting at sunset, participants stroll with their illuminated lanterns along the designated one mile route. Along the way, there are multiple stations where children learn safe walking tips. Drivers learn about crosswalk safety and parents are encouraged to practice safe street crossings with their children during the walk. Residents along the route can help make the autumn walk especially beautiful by placing lights along the sidewalks, decorating their porches and applauding the children for their beautiful lanterns.
Lanterns can easily be crafted at home or at a free lantern-making workshop 5-7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Creamery Art Center, 411 N. Sherman Parkway.
