The Springfield Fire Department will be holding fire extinguisher and escape ladder giveaways throughout July and August, while supplies last. The first fire extinguisher giveaway is Thursday, July 20 at 1 p.m. at Springfield Fire Station 1, located at 720 E. Grand St. To be eligible recipients must live within the city limits of Springfield; must have a child under the age of 14 living in the home; must not currently have access to a fire extinguisher; and must be willing to attend a 20-minute training session before receiving their extinguisher.
“The Springfield Fire Department recommends that every home have a working fire extinguisher to help reduce fire related injuries and fatalities,” said Fire and Life Safety Educator Cara Erwin. “However, it’s important to know how and when to properly use one. The free training will provide tips and tricks to help keep your family safe.”
Free fire escape ladders will also be available to a limited number of participants. The first escape ladder giveaway will be held on Friday, July 21 at 1 p.m. at Fire Station 1. To be eligible recipients must live within the city limits of Springfield; must have a child under the age of 14 sleeping on the second floor of the home or above; and be willing to attend a 30 minute training session before receiving their ladder.
These events are for the first 20 people who RSVP. You may RSVP by e-mailing JOrlando@SpringfieldMo.gov; calling (417) 874-2306; or messaging Springfield, MO Fire Department on Facebook.
The training and giveaways are funded through a Fire Prevention and Safety Grant awarded to the Springfield Fire Department in 2016.
