Delaware Neighborhood held its first holiday lights celebration in December to thank neighbors for the bright and creative decoration displays. It started out as a ‘nominate or volunteer and have your lights judged’ type of format but morphed into the judges just driving around ooh-ing and aah-ing. Snowflake awards and notes thanking neighbors for ‘brightening up Delaware’ were dropped off to some of the best. You truly don’t appreciate the effect of the displays until you drive every street and get totally overwhelmed by the brightness and volume!
We appreciate the work under way this late winter to improve the walkability of our neighborhood for all residents. Through the Neighborhood Works program, City employees and contractors are hard at work to repair broken and rough sidewalks and add Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps where needed. While the work itself is messy, the end result will be better sidewalks for us all. Now if we could just get people to remove their gumballs and other sidewalk obstructions, and not park across the sidewalks, we’d be in pedestrian heaven!
Appreciation and thanks go out to a Delaware resident who noticed a house break-in in progress during her midday run. She called SPD, and thanks to her and to their quick action, the man was stopped and arrested, albeit after doing damage to the front porch and window of the home (luckily the owner was not home). Thank you Delaware, for being a neighborhood where people do not hesitate to get involved and report issues.
