Make your mark this summer with Explore, Springfield Public Schools’ free, innovative summer learning program. With hands-on, engaging activities, exciting curriculum and personalized learning opportunities, there’s no time for local students to be bored this summer.

“Explore is a unique opportunity for students to explore their passions, while having fun all summer long,” said Dana Webb, director of summer learning and student experiences. “It’s more than school during summer, Explore is eight weeks of innovative, hands-on learning experiences that are engaging, relevant and personal.”

Students of all ages will have opportunities to engage in exciting field experiences like visiting the zoo, exploring the Watershed Center or learning survival skills at Dogwood Canyon. Plus, every day, students will use technology to learn and collaborate with others, meet new friends who share their interests and explore future college and career opportunities.

“From all day pre-kindergarten classes for our youngest learners to online classes for our high school students, there’s something for every learner at Explore,” said Superintendent John Jungmann.

SPS’ fine arts summer program Artworks returns this summer to celebrate its 35th year of providing fine arts experiences and education. Students grades 3-8 can choose from more than 70 fine arts courses in photography, ceramics, candle making, stage acting and more. And again this year, Artworks will be at two locations: Bingham and Twain elementary schools.

For high school students, there are multiple pathways to high school credit. Students can maximize their time by earning credit anytime, anywhere with online learning. With 30 online classes to choose from, students can pick the time and place to complete coursework this summer. Seniors can get even further ahead by earning free college credit by taking dual-enrollment classes at OTC or dual-credit classes at Parkview High School or online.

Children who will start kindergarten in August 2017 can get a jumpstart on being classroom ready. Participating in Explore classes will help young learners increase confidence, build relationships, understand expectations and become familiar with the classroom environment and routine—all while having fun! Enroll in “D is for Dinosaurs,” “Future Eagle” and “Wonderful Me.”

No matter their interest, students and their families will choose what class and Explore location they’d like to attend. This all-day summer program is offered at 22 schools, with free breakfast and lunch at all sites. Wrap-around before- and after-school services will be available. Plus, bus transportation will be provided for eligible students.

“Last summer, our community made Explore 2016 an overwhelming success,” said Dr. Jungmann. “More than 10,600 students received more than 1.6 million instructional hours. But like our students, we’re always learning. We’ve listened to feedback from our community, and we’re refining our processes and programs to better meet the needs of our students, families and teachers. That’s why Explore 2017 will be even better.
