On Saturday, Feb. 8, Doling on Atlantic held an opportunity briefing to share their vision for the future. It has been one year since the long-abandoned school in the Woodland Heights neighborhood was purchased. Doling Elementary School opened in 1916 and closed in 2002.
In 2021, husband and wife Mike Stevens and Kate Baird announced plans to convert Doling into studio space for artists to rent, but ultimately could not make the project work financially. They have since opened New Moon Studio Space in the former Oak Grove School at 2574 E. Bennett in the Oak Grove neighborhood.
The new owner of the former Doling school, Wes Melton, has developed a vision for the school to serve as a community center with event rental space for non-profits, entrepreneurs and small businesses.
Melton envisions the former school as a hub, offering affordable space to help individuals and organizations to establish a brick-and-mortar presence. Woodland Heights looks forward to seeing new tenants join the Doling on Atlantic space and the neighborhood looks forward to partnering with Doling on Atlantic in the future. Woodland Heights is thrilled that this historic building has found new use.
