This summer was packed with exciting events and community spirit in the West Central Neighborhood! We kicked things off in June with our Summer Social at Mother’s Brewing Company’s backyard. The event was a huge success, with delicious catering provided by El Paraiso, bringing neighbors together for an evening of fun and connection.
In July, we continued the summer vibes with our Ice Cream Social at the Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park on College Street. It was a perfect day to cool off with some sweet treats while enjoying the company of friends and family.
Our Walking Club added a twist to the usual strolls by taking things underground, thanks to the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks. We had the unique opportunity to tour the Jordan Creek tunnel system under downtown, learning about the history of this important waterway and admiring some fascinating urban art along the way. We’re excited about the Jordan Creek daylighting project that has just started, which will bring this historically significant creek back into the open right in our neighborhood.
The highlight of the season was undoubtedly the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival. With 550 registered cars and perfect weather, it was an event to remember! The streets were filled with entertainment, stunning show cars, and smiles all around. Our neighborhood and downtown truly came alive. A heartfelt thanks to all the West Central neighbors and O’Reilly Auto Parts team members who volunteered their time. Special thanks also go out to O’Reilly and State Farm for sponsoring the car show.
As we transition into fall, there’s plenty to look forward to. Our monthly meetings resumed on Tuesday, Sept. 24, so mark your calendars. These meetings are a great opportunity to stay informed and involved. We regularly receive updates from our City Council representative, our police area representative, and the fire department. Major issues we’re working on and discussing include nuisance properties, our Neighbors Helping Neighbors initiative, and advocating to the council to address the vehicle noise problem that plagues downtown, our neighborhood and the city at large.
Don’t forget the weekly Farmers Market on the Square, every Saturday through October, where you can find fresh produce and local goods. Our Morning Mosey-ers Walking Club continues to meet every Thursday morning, and we’re also gearing up for our monthly Third Thursday Trash Pickup (location to be announced on social media or our website).
