What is a Community Health Advocate?
Community Health Advocates (CHAs) are trusted members of the neighborhoods they serve. CHAs build relationships with their neighbors to help them live healthier lives by connecting them to community resources and healthcare services. As a CHA for the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, I conduct blood pressure screenings and facilitate access to care through local healthcare partnerships. I also provide health education and help our residents navigate community resources.
What made you decide to apply for the role of Community Health Advocate?
I have a passion for healthy living and bettering my community, the role of CHA allows me to achieve both.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most about being a CHA, is building relationships with individuals in our community and being able to provide support to our neighborhoods. I am passionate about getting citizens connected to the resources they need to help them live healthier lives.
Why is maintaining a healthy blood pressure so important?
Knowing your blood pressure numbers is vital. About one in three adults has high blood pressure. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to damage of the arteries, heart, brain and kidneys. It’s often known as the “silent killer” because many people are not aware of their high blood pressure until they have a more serious health issue, such as a heart attack.
How can neighbors request a blood pressure screening, referral or more information?
If you would like to learn more about the program or need a health referral, please contact a CHA by email at CHA@springfieldmo.gov or by phone at 864-2477.
Or, look for me in the community! When I’m not going door-to-door in Springfield neighborhoods talking to residents, you might see me at a variety of locations from area retailers to Springfield libraries. Please stop by, say hello and get a blood pressure reading. It could save your life!
