After a false start trying to convert the former Doling Elementary School building, the owners of a place for artists to create are over the moon about their recent opening in Oak Grove.

Husband and wife Kate Baird, an artist, and Mike Stevens, executive director of Moxie Cinema, opened New Moon Studio Space in September at 2574 E. Bennett. The building was most recently the home of Junior League of Springfield, but housed Oak Grove Elementary School from 1935 until the 1980s. The school, annexed by Springfield Public Schools in 1956, served the former unincorporated community of Oak Grove Heights and was.

“Private and shared studio spaces in a range of sizes are available,” says Baird. “The studios are housed in the old Oak Grove School building dating to 1935, so many of the studios are former classrooms with large windows and abundant natural light. Rent for studio spaces will likely range from $125/month to $795/month. There are also a variety of other spaces on offer.”

Amenities include:

  • 24-hour access
  • WIFI/internet
  • climate-controlled spaces
  • off-street parking.

“We aim to meet the needs of a range of creative practices and attract a mix of emerging, mid-career and established artists,” Baird said.
