Drivers can expect lane closings, narrow lanes and traffic shifts on Kearney Street when contractor crews complete pedestrian safety improvements beginning the week of June 3, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
The majority of the Kearney Street sidewalk work will be done during daytime hours. Resurfacing work will be done during nighttime hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Project improvements at various locations on Kearney Street include:
- Replace existing non-compliant sidewalk and curb ramps in accordance with ADA requirements
- Signal modifications at North Fulbright Avenue, North Barnes Avenue and North Neergard avenues
- Install new sidewalk and ADA curb ramps to fill in sidewalk gaps
- Replace existing push buttons with audible push buttons at signalized intersections
- Install HAWK (High Intensity Activated Crosswalk) signals on Kearney Street at Robberson Avenue, Summit Avenue and Broadway Avenue
- Replace existing non-compliant bus stop pads to meet ADA standards
- Replace existing driveways to meet ADA standards
- Update pavement marking to high visibility continental marking at crosswalks to enhance pedestrian safety.
Capital Paving & Construction of Columbia is doing the work for $14.9 million. The project is to be complete by Dec. 31, 2025.
