As heat indices today are expected to top 104 today, Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management and City of Springfield offer the following advice for places to seek relief from the heat:
Public spaces, such as Springfield-Greene County libraries, City facilities and Springfield-Greene County facilities, as well as private property opened to the public, such as the Battlefield Mall are recommended.
The Springfield-Greene County Park Board adjusts schedules at outdoor pools and the Springfield Skate Park, and offers cooling center options.
POOLS
If scheduling allows, the Park Board strives to keep at least one outdoor pool open late during National Weather Service Heat Advisories, including:
Splash & Sizzle discount swimming events continue every weekend in July. Grant Beach, Westport and Silver Springs pools are Fridays in July until 8 p.m. Grant Beach, Westport, Silver Springs and Meadow pools are open Saturdays in July until 8 p.m. A rare opportunity for night swimming takes place at Fassnight Pool, open Saturdays in July until 10 p.m. After 5:30 p.m., admission to all pools is $1, or free with a canned food donation. Food donations benefit Ozarks Food Harvest.

COOLING CENTERS
All three Springfield-Greene County Park Board Family Centers, as well as Mediacom Ice Park, open their lobbies as free public cooling centers during Heat Advisories. All lobbies have seating, restroom access and air conditioning. No formal programming is planned. (Media advisory: cooling centers are available, but are seldom busy. SPRINGFIELD SKATE PARK
To ensure patron safety, the Springfield Skate Park operates on a modified schedule during Heat Advisories and anytime the facility’s indoor temperature reaches 95 degrees. The indoor portion of the Skate Park is not air conditioned, and the outdoor portion is not shaded. High-temperature operating hours are:
Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 5-9 p.m., Friday, 7-11 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m., 7-11 p.m, closed Monday.
