The sun was shining for a special celebration at Sunshine Elementary.
On Dec. 10, 2020, Sunshine Elementary students, staff and community members gathered to cut the ribbon and officially open the new learning facility. Sunshine is the oldest elementary school in Springfield.
“When I stood here in August at our groundbreaking, I had several remarks on what this building means to me and this community,” said Dr. Tracy Daniels, Sunshine principal. “Today I stand before you with a card that has one word: gratitude. I am so grateful for this facility and its incredible team for our amazing students.”
Sunshine Elementary School received a total renovation and expansion of their learning facility to better serve its students, including a new group from the former Portland Elementary. Portland’s closure made space for a new $40 million Jarrett Middle School, to open in August 2022.
“This celebration would not be possible today without the support of the Springfield community,” said Superintendent John Jungmann. “In April 2019, Springfield citizens supported Proposition S so that we could invest $168 million in improving our schools. Remodeling and expanding Sunshine was just one of those major projects.”
