On Saturday, May 4th, the Woodland Heights Neighborhood Association celebrated their 10th Annual Dirt Day event in Historic Lafayette Park.
For 10 years Dirt Day has served as Woodland Heights’ celebration of springtime and community. Neighbors gather together in the park to exchange plants and seeds, enjoy live music, food, and each other’s company. There is no cost associated with Dirt Day. Nothing is for sale. Everything is free. And each “vendor” provides a free activity for children to participate in.
This year, rain threatened to disrupt the festivities. At 7 a.m. when our friends from the Springfield-Greene County Park Board arrived to help us set up for the event, rain had already started to fall. And it soon fell harder. But north siders are nothing if not persistent. There was fretting and talk of cancellation. But patience prevailed. At around 10 a.m., the skies completely cleared. The sun shone through and a gentle breeze blew down the promenade of Lafayette Park. All was well, and Dirt Day began, if only a few minutes late.
This year’s Dirt Day was just as magical as ever. And, even with the early rainfall, the crowd kept coming. There were clowns, and bubbles, bouncy houses and smiling faces all around.
Special thanks to this year’s Dirt Day sponsors: Habitat for Humanity, ESC Consulting Engineers, Quality Auto Works, Green Thumb 101, McAfee Real Estate Group, Sandy’s Print Shop, Affordable Splendor Cakes, Miller Coach Company, and Arnie’s Plumbing.
We hope to see everyone again next year for our 11th annual Dirt Day in Lafayette Park.
